Areas of Expertise

FELLOWSHIP TRAINING

A fellowship is further study which is undertaken after the completion of Orthopaedic training, once a surgeon is fully qualified. It is an opportunity to gain experience in specific areas of practice by working with highly regarded experts in their field.

MY FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE

Revision knee surgery

My experience at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre with Mr Andrew Porteous, a surgeon specialising in revision knee surgery, involved the investigation and treatment of the failing knee replacement. This unit performed a high volume of complex knee replacement revision surgery. In addition to this invaluable operative experience, the understanding of the many failure modes of knee replacement provided an excellent basis for avoiding problems and correctly performing primary knee replacement surgery.

Patellofemoral surgery

During my Fellowship in Bristol I trained with Mr Jonathan Eldridge, a leader in the management of complex patellofemoral problems. I gained experience in the treatment of severe dysplasia, patellofemoral arthritis and patellofemoral replacement, revision patellofemoral surgery, and the minimally invasive management of patella dislocations.

Total knee replacement

All of my Fellowships have included a very extensive experience in primary total knee replacement, using both conventional and computer guided techniques. There has been a focus on accurate alignment, precise soft tissue balancing, and techniques to reduce post operative inflammation, pain, and blood loss.

Uncompartmental knee replacement

My experience at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre provided valuable exposure to unicompartmental knee replacement (uni-knee, or half-knee replacement). Although this surgery has lost popularity in Sydney, excellent results were being achieved in the UK. This surgery offers faster return to function, less pain, and more normal movement.

Arthroscopic knee surgery and ligament reconstruction

My fellowship with Sydney Knee Specialists provided exposure to a high volume of sports knee conditions such as ACL ruptures, and meniscal tears, as well as their arthroscopic treatment.

Computer-guided surgery

My experience in both Bristol and Sydney has provided a vast experience of computer-guided surgery, including both navigation, and PSI. Computer-guided surgery has become an intrinsic part of my practice.

POST-FELLOWSHIP VISITS

Meniscal transplantation

I have travelled to Ghent, Belgium to visit Professor Rene Verdonk, a world leader in meniscal replacement, to gain experience in meniscal transplantation.

ACL surgery

I have visited Dr Freddie Fu, a world-renowned surgeon who specialises in ACL reconstruction. I gained exposure to double-bundle reconstruction techniques, treatment of partial ACL ruptures, and to biological enhancement of surgery.
