Dr Buddhika Balalla

Dr Buddhika Balalla is an Australian-trained Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon, who specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including arthroscopic (key-hole) surgery, ACL and other ligament reconstruction, partial (uni-knee) and total knee replacement, revision knee replacement and computer assisted surgery. His philosophy is one of constant refinement and excellence in all aspects of a patient’s care, including assessment, surgery, and rehabilitation, and maintaining and applying the most up-to-date knowledge of current orthopaedic developments and technology.

Dr Balalla grew up in Sydney, attended Sydney Boys High School and subsequently studied medicine at the University of New South Wales. After graduating in 2001, he completed his internship and residency at St George and Sutherland Hospitals.

In 2003 he was selected for Basic Surgical Training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), and in 2007 he was selected for the RACS/Australian Orthopaedic Association Advanced Training Program in Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr Balalla completed his specialist orthopaedic training in 2010, gaining him Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

In 2011, he completed a fellowship with Sydney Knee Specialists focusing on knee arthroscopy, knee replacement, ligament reconstruction, and cartilage transplantation.

In early 2012, Dr Balalla completed a second knee fellowship at the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol UK. He worked with Mr Andrew Porteous, a highly respected revision arthroplasty specialist, and Mr Jonathan Eldridge, a world-leading specialist in patellofemoral surgery. Dr Balalla received training in investigating and treating problematic knee replacements, and on the treatment of patellofemoral instability.

Dr Balalla has visited Dr Freddie Fu, a world leader in orthopaedic knee surgery in Pittsburgh USA, to observe alternative techniques in ACL reconstruction surgery, such as quadriceps tendon graft harvest, and double bundle ACL reconstruction.

He has also travelled to Ghent in Belgium to visit Professor Rene Verdonk, one of Europe’s foremost authorities on knee surgery to gain experience in meniscal transplantation and multiligament reconstruction.

Dr Balalla is a member of several societies of knee specialists, and frequently travels both locally and internationally to keep abreast of new developments and techniques in knee surgery that might benefit his patients. He has a particular focus on using computer guidance and tissue preserving techniques. He works with many leading orthopaedic companies to design new implants and instruments for knee replacement and knee reconstruction.

Dr Balalla is currently the Department head of Orthopaedics at Westmead Hospital. He operates at the Lakeview Private Hospital, St Vincents Private Hospital, and Norwest Private Hospital. He consults in Bella Vista (Norwest) and Double Bay.
